Former physician sentenced

March 8, 2012
The Maui Weekly

Hawai'i Reporter - Dr. Harold Charles Spear III, formerly of Hanapepe, Kaua'i, was sentenced last week to 12 years, seven months in prison for unlawfully distributing controlled substances. He pled guilty to four counts of dispensing "outside of the usual course of professional practice" and "not for a legitimate medical purpose." He was also charged with a similar offense in the Middle District of Alabama.

United States Attorney for the District of Hawai'i Florence T. Nakakuni stated that Spear prescribed a Schedule II controlled substance, methadone, to a patient in Hawai'i four times in 2005 and 2006 without a legitimate medical purpose, which is in violation of federal law.
