Viewpoints Gallery in Makawao invites the public to an Opening Reception with the Artists on Friday, March 16, 5 p.m. The show will feature work by Joseph Fletcher, Michael Clements, Carmen Gardner, Jazz Glickenhaus and Vince Hogan.
Portraying the simple aspects of the world in which we live, Fletcher's artwork honors the moment and dedicates the craft to recording the living history of Maui in a strong and vibrant manner. His assured strokes and textured approach brings life and energy to the paintings he creates.
"Being an artist to me means learning how to see light and color in it's constantly changing states," said Clements. "It is high drama that gets my heart pounding from the thought that I just might be able to 'catch' it."
Fireworks by Carmen Gardner, one of the featured artists at Viewpoint Gallery in Makawao.
Gardner's watercolor celebration of Maui is a luminous tribute to the people, special moments and natural beauty that, together, make Maui "no ka 'oi."
"In my art, I tend to focus on both abstract and realism, finding a point in the middle where these two styles can come together," said Glickenhaus. "I have come to realize that this often allows for a broader interpretation on the part of the viewer."
Hawai'i-born Hogan has been turning Maui hardwoods for over two decades. Milo, koa, and kolohala are his media, creating spectacular traditional and contemporary pieces. The Hawaiian calabash and Ed Moulthrop are his two biggest influences--Maui's forests his inspiration.
The exhibit will run from March 16 to April 19. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
