Many demand more details in the Maui Island General Plan

March 29, 2012
The Maui Weekly

The Maui County Council's General Plan Committee recessed last Wednesday with calls for more details in the plan heard in testimony. Department of Planning Director Will Spence has argued that too many details will overcomplicate the plan and contribute to disarray for planners and members of the public to sort out.

More than a dozen people testified during the meeting, the majority of whom requested more details in the plan. Committee Chairwoman Gladys Baisa is pushing for the completion of the plan. "We've got to focus and get it done," she said.

She added that the committee has completed a table detailing the makeup of rural and urban areas within the plan. Ma'alaea Community Association President Pam Daoust testified that Spence's recommendation to take out details would be detrimental to the control of sustainable growth.
