KITV - The March 9 storm on Maui did more than wreak havoc on streams and cause traffic issues throughout the island. Forty residents of Huelo are still stranded due to the downpour that washed away the land bridge that connected to Hana Highway.
Keith Thompson, a resident of the affected land, said he watched the destruction of the bridge on Hanauana Road during the storm. He and other residents subsequently posted warning signs and contacted the Department of Land and Natural Resources. The DLNR informed them that the road is not owned by the county or the state--saying, effectively, that they are not responsible for the damages.
Sen. Kalani English was not of the same opinion. He flew from O'ahu to survey the damage personally and then began working with Mayor Alan Arakawa to seek a solution.
In the interim, the residents have stationed cars on both sides of the fallen bridge so that they still have access other parts of the island. Damages are estimated to cost $240,000.
