KHON2 - The driver of a deadly crash in Kula that took the lives of five people had been previously cited for speeding and driving under the influence. Libert Qalivere, 21, was driving the Dodge Neon that crashed on the early morning of March 25. Fatalities included his girlfriend and cousin.
The group was returning from a party in Kaupo when the accident occurred.
"The last time I saw him, we shook hands, made sure he was sober enough to drive and he showed absolutely no sign," said Wylan Myers, a friend of Qalivere and the victims. "We were all up for over 24 hours, a lot of us worked the day of, so a lot of us were extremely tired."
Two of the victims were students of the culinary program at University of Hawai'i Maui College. A memorial ceremony was held on the campus last Friday.
Friends of Qalivere insist that he was not drunk, but instead, fell asleep at the wheel. Investigators cited excessive speed and alcohol as main contributors to the accident.
