The Maui News - A fire that killed 11 dogs in Waikapu on March 30 is suspected to be arson. The dogs, including five puppies, perished when a fire set to an adjacent shed spread to their kennel. The shed and kennel were owned by John Duarte on a piece of land between Kuikahi Drive and the Waiolani subdivision.
"(It's) just a horrible situation that someone (might) target these poor innocent creatures. Because my guess is this is not about the dogs, this is something personal," said Jocelyn Bouchard, chief executive officer of the Maui Humane Society, which also is investigating the case. "This is a horrible case of cruelty."
The locks on both gates to the property had been broken when Duarte arrived at the scene, alerted to the fire by a neighbor. "I hope they catch the guys before me," Duarte said. "Nobody had any reason to target the dogs."
Up to a $1,000 reward is being offered for tips that lead to the arrest and indictment of suspects. Anyone having information is asked to call the Maui Police Department at 244-6400 or Crime Stoppers at 242-6966.
