Alstom Grid, a global leader in power generation and transmission with over 100 years of experience in electrical grids, has been selected to provide its e-terradistribution Integrated Distribution Management System for Maui's Smart Grid demonstration project. The Maui Smart Grid project hopes to reduce peak energy demand, improve service quality, allow consumers to make informed energy-usage decisions and integrate renewable energy into the existing Maui Electric Company grid. Up to 200 customer volunteers in the South Maui area will receive in-home smart grid systems during this testing phase. The project, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, is being co-led by the Hawai'i Natural Energy Institute at the University of Hawai'i. Alstom Network Management Solutions Vice President Karim El Naggar said in a statement, "By deploying new distribution and home automation technologies, MECO will gain hands-on experience in maintaining grid reliability that is invaluable as the state transitions to a cleaner energy future. Alstom is proud of our role in this project in ushering in the era of a smarter and more reliable electric power grid."
