Thirteen libraries across the state will offer readers free comic books on Saturday, May 5, in celebration of the 11th anniversary of Free Comic Book Day. Participating on Maui are the Kihei and Lahaina Public Libraries.
Library patrons showing their valid Hawai'i State Public Library System (HSPLS) card will receive a special, free comic book, while supplies last.
The Friends of the Library of Hawai'i is the overall sponsor of this year's event; co-sponsors are Jelly's the Original and Collector Maniacs.
Free Comic Book Day (www.freecomicbookday.com) is celebrated worldwide on the first Saturday in May. Participating libraries and comic book shops have given away millions of free comic books over the past 10 years. Each participating HSPLS library will offer a variety of comic books for all ages. Readers can choose from among popular series including "The Avengers," "DC Comics: The New 52," "Dune," "Peanuts," "Smurfs," and "Under the Faerie Moon Preview."
Last year, a total of 1,766 people received a free comic book at participating libraries.
