Smart meters cleverly green-washed

May 10, 2012

There has been zero coverage in Maui's media about the documented health and privacy issues surrounding smart meter technology. [Editor's note: See "Is the Smart Grid a Smart Move for Maui?" in the April 26-May 2 issue of the Maui Weekly.]

Over 50 California counties and municipalities have placed moratoriums on smart meters. The World Health Organization has classified radiation emitted from wireless devices such as smart meters as carcinogens.

Yet, Maui Electric Company is installing smart meters and plans to have the Maui Meadows "Smart Grid" pilot project online this month. This project has been so cleverly green-washed that over 100 MECO customers have volunteered to have these dangerous meters installed on their homes!

Former CIA Director James Woosley warns that smart grids are extremely vulnerable, as they are tied to the Internet, and thus easily taken down by terrorists and hackers.

Maui residents are gaining awareness of the many insidious aspects of this new technology. Hundreds have signed the online petition to stop smart meters in Hawai'i at www.StopSmartMetersHawaii.com. We do not want "smart" meters in our homes, in our neighborhoods, or a "smart" grid radiating our island.

If you would like to find out more information about smart meters, attend a short film and meeting on smart meters on Wednesday, May 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Kihei Charter School located at Lipoa Center on E. Lipoa Street in Kihei.

Please call 572-5831 to help with this meeting or any aspect of this movement.
