Sometimes There Are Miracles

“Return unto Me, and I will return unto you.” Malachi 3:7

One man under a tree for 49 days with no food? This may not sound like something you want to sign up for. However, Maui resident Neil Crummett set out upon this journey to discover the meaning of existence and spiritual awakening--and succeeded.

Crummett, who was willing to go to great lengths to seek enlightenment, recently completed his 49-day fast. Anxious to bring reverence into his daily existence and also help others, he agreed to have his experience filmed as a documentary called "TREE," which is expected to be released later this year.

The utter simplicity and intense spiritual beauty of Crummett's experience brought many Maui experts in science, medicine, philosophy and spirituality to his aid.

"It seemed that as I struggled to best relate to God, a teacher would show up and speak to that issue," Crummett said. "It is true that when the student is ready the teacher will appear."

In a chorus of divine discovery, yearning and celebration, there were many lights to help point the way for him.

"Something buried so deep inside of me that I had forgotten rose to the surface," he said. "I realized I lost my confidence and I feel like I've got it back. I learned how to choose happiness and I found my laughter again."

The response came throughout the 49 days in the form of understanding, as if a dam had burst in his soul. Crummett's search for God had been like a hand trying to grasp itself. God, who is infinite, is never absent.

"He was here all along," said Crummett.

Crummett attained the courage to learn and heal, to let the past go and not carry burdens.

"Sometimes there are miracles," he said. "I now understand the way life operates. The energy that is in us has been around since creation. We share it. It's part of us. God is love."

Clearly, the journey that lies ahead for Crummett is the journey of an enlightened soul. Experiencing the gift of grace, he envisions a life of service in community organizations and groups dedicated to human betterment. He is also writing his story along with a book of prayers and meditations.

Crummett and "TREE" Producer and Director Mark Matthews, also a Maui resident, are grateful for the local support they received, and appreciate all continuing input and contributions.
