On the morning of Sunday, June 3, a 12-year-old boy identified as Christian Lopez from Chula Vista, Calif., fell approximately 300 to 350 feet from a lookout located on the Keane side of Honomanu Bay near mile marker 14.75 on Hana Highway.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the boy was with his family, and as their rental vehicle parked at the lookout, the victim quickly exited the vehicle and ran toward the dirt hill at the lookout. According to witnesses' statements, the victim's mother, identified as Tanya Lopez, exited the vehicle after her son and called out to him. However, the victim continued and suddenly disappeared over the edge.
Police and fire personnel responded. Fire Ski-7 launched from Honomanu Bay and retrieved the victim from the ocean. The victim was brought to shore and transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center. Attempts to resuscitate the victim were unsuccessful. The victim sustained massive head trauma and subsequently succumbed to his injuries. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
