Pacific Business News - Gov. Neil Abercrombie said Hawai'i is the first state to declare to the federal government that it intends to develop a state-based health insurance exchange under the federal healthcare reform law.
Gov. Abercrombie sent a "declaration letter" to the U.S. Health and Human Services Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight last week that says Hawai'i will establish a health insurance exchange called the Hawai'i Health Connector. The exchange is expected to be in place by Jan. 1, 2014, Gov. Abercrombie said in a statement.
The state recently awarded a $452,800 contract to Boston-based Public Consulting Group to design the information technology infrastructure for the online exchange.
