Maui’s first Target to be part of new Pu‘unene Shopping Center

June 28, 2012
The Maui Weekly

Honolulu Star-Advertiser - Target Corp. has plans to build its first store on Maui, its fifth in Hawai'i, as the anchor of a Central Maui shopping center planned by a Safeway subsidiary.

Property Development Centers, the real estate development arm of Safeway, is in negotiations to purchase 24 acres of land for the proposed Pu'unene Shopping Center from Honolulu-based landowner Alexander and Baldwin. While Safeway doesn't intend to build a store in the 273,280-square-foot center, Minneapolis-based Target has committed to opening a 136,500 square-foot store there.

Target had reportedly considered opening a store in Kihei several years ago, but those plans never materialized.
