An 18-year-old visiting from Arizona is dead after falling off a 40-foot cliff at a Maui bridge.

Maui police said Mathew Cote of Mesa, AZ, suddenly lost his footing Sunday at Makapipi Bridge off the scenic Hana Highway.

Cote's father saw his son go over the guardrail to take a photo, when he slipped and fell over the edge onto some rocks and into a pond. Witnesses said that the man did not resurface. The water below the bridge is not accessible from Hana Highway.

Passing motorists were flagged down by bystanders and asked to call for help, said Ryan Joslin, spokesman for the Maui County Paramedics Association. Fire responders arrived at the scene just before 2 p.m.

Police said Cote was under water for up to an hour before rescue divers could retrieve him.

He was pronounced dead at Hana Health Clinic.
