Ing from, dedicated to South Maui

August 9, 2012
Kaniela Ing - Kihei , The Maui Weekly

A letter writer questioned my candidacy intentions as job-seeking and opportunistic. To clarify, I have dedicated much to obtain the relevant education and experience to become an effective public servant. Despite receiving lucrative job offers in Washington, D.C., and being pushed to run for an open seat in Honolulu, I entered a highly contested race to serve my home island of Maui.

The letter writer also asserted that I may be from Honolulu. In fact, I am the only candidate in my race from Maui. South Maui is where my parents first settled down and it is my permanent home.

I am running so that my keiki and grandchildren will be able to experience this beautiful place as I have and be afforded even more opportunities for success. However, throughout my lifetime, I have seen South Maui change more than any other district.

Our public servants must emphasize issues that will affect the direction South Maui is headed. From listening to thousands of neighbors around our community, these issues include education, local jobs and business, and sustainable and renewable practices.

This is what our fresh vision for Maui's future is all about, and it's why I am dedicating the years ahead of me to serve the place that has given me so much.
