The Maui News - A human skull found near Waiohuli Hawaiian Homes in Kula was to be turned over to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources after it was determined to be from a child who died more than 50 years ago, police said.
Police recovered the skull after it was found on Saturday, Aug. 18, by a group of hunters who were in an area of former leased ranch land just below the subdivision, said Lt. Jayson Rego of the Criminal Investigation Division.
He said a forensic examination determined the skull was from a minor and "well over 50 years old." Because of the deteriorated condition of the skull, it couldn't be determined whether it was a male or female, Rego said.
The find will not require a criminal investigation. Rego said the skull was to be turned over to DLNR for interment.
