Global Tech Maui, a new high school, is opening at the Main Street Promenade Building in the heart of Wailuku Town. This new facility presents a uniquely different option for Maui's families with high school students.
The board of directors of this nonprofit, independent school has signed a lease with property management firm Ryconi Management Hawai'i LLC for space on the ground floor of this three-story office building.
Global Tech Maui is a full-time, four-year, "bricks-and-mortar" secondary school, combining the academic philosophies and curriculum of Montessori education with the "High Tech High/New Tech High" educational models. These models use the new literacy of multimedia technology to allow students to work through a rigorous college-prep curriculum.
Project-based service learning is at the core of the curriculum, forging alliances with local businesses and academic communities to create internships and apprenticeships, so that the students can learn from their community and give back to their community. In this way, the students will have real world experience in which to utilize their academic skills and provides exposure to post-secondary occupations.
The school's chosen location enables it to take advantage of nearby public amenities such as ball fields, swimming pools, tennis courts and gyms, as well as to partner with nonprofits such as the Maui Academy of Performing Arts to round out the school curriculum with extracurricular activities.
Frank Rocha coordinates all athletics at the school, while Uilani Nahoolewa directs all art/digital media programs. Elaine Blasi is the head of school.
Global Technology High School is now accepting freshmen and sophomores for the 2012-13 school year. Classroom space is limited, so prompt student enrollment is encouraged.
Global Technology High School offers individual site tours and opportunities to meet the staff. Families are encouraged to visit the school's Website at www.globaltechmaui.org for more information about the school and its programs.
