“Get the Drift and Bag it” Marine Debris Cleanups

September 6, 2012
The Maui Weekly

Community Work Day (CWD) Program's annual "Get the Drift and Bag it" cleanup event is an opportunity for residents to join together in a global effort to remove litter and debris from our coastal environment. The events will be coordinated in partnership with the Ocean Conservancy and Surfrider Foundation-Maui Chapter as a part of their International Coastal Cleanup.

While the global effort takes place on a single day, Saturday, Sept. 15, data is accepted for cleanups that take place within 30 days of the September date, which allows for coordinators flexibility to schedule convenient dates for their groups.

Volunteers are welcome to participate as a part of scheduled events, or pick up bags, gloves and other supplies to coordinate their own group at a location of their choice through Oct. 14. CWD will provide the supplies for your event.

The first events to be held as a part of this year's cleanup begin on Sept. 15 at four meeting points--Sugar Beach at Maui Canoe Club in Kihei, near the Camp Olowalu sign in Olowalu, at Ma'alaea Harbor, and at Kamehameha Iki Park in Lahaina. All events are scheduled to take place from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

All cleanup supplies and data cards will be provided for volunteers. Water will be supplied and volunteers are encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles and work gloves. To lessen the collective contribution to the waste stream, volunteers may also bring their own reusable bags or buckets for litter pickups. Carpooling, walking and bicycling to the event are suggested. Divers are encouraged to participate in underwater cleanups.

If you would like to volunteer for any of the upcoming cleanups, suggest a site for litter removal, or for more information, contact CWD at (808) 877-2524 or
