Be Your Own Boss

September 20, 2012
Marc Antosch , The Maui Weekly

Starting your own business is an adventure--just ask anyone who's done it. Guaranteed they have crazy stories explaining how "there's more to it than meets the eye." However, the stories of satisfaction and reward usually prevail and churn the thought process into a realistic idea of actually being your own boss. It is not an easy feat starting a business; something so seemingly simple can prove to be more difficult than you think... Unless you are well prepared. So let's liken it to hitting a golf ball.

First of all, you'll never hit a golf ball if you never swing a club. It takes motivation, tools and determination to be successful. Imagine stepping up to the ball and getting ready to smash it. You swing with all your might only to miss the ball completely. You try again and get the same result. But with a little coaching, focus and a better understanding of what's involved, everything will line up. Then BAM! You'll start to hit the ball and hear that sweet sound of success. Now you are on your way to learning how to play golf, or in this case, starting your own business.

Luckily on Maui, you have many cheerleaders and resources willing to help you succeed. For starters, Maui Economic Opportunities (MEO) offers Core Four Business Planning Classes available every other month in addition to micro-loans that will help you get your feet off the ground.

Then there is the Maui County Business Resource Center. Their Service Corp of Retired Executives (SCORE) volunteers provide information and expertise to help new start-ups and existing businesses take their ideas or business to the next level while offering free workshops.

Equally important are the classes and coaching offered at Maui Economic Development Board (MEDB) and EdVenture. Look for new, special, bundled classes that will guide you with a roadmap to success in any type of business you can dream up.

Before you know it, you'll be on par with the thousands of other successful local Maui businesses bringing jobs and economic growth to your island and your community.

To find out more call MEO at 249-2990, Maui County Resource Center at 873-8247, MEDB at 875-2300 and EdVenture at 984-3231.
