Story of Hawaii Museum
Now living on Lana'i, Turqueza was born in Hawai'i, raised in California and returned to the islands after graduating from high school. His passion for Hawaiian studies began when he started researching the ikaika helmet, because he wanted to use the design for his clothing company. He discovered that the helmet almost everyone in Hawai'i associates with the ancient Hawaiian warrior was never worn by anyone anywhere near the battlefield.
Both Turqueza and Kakaio have sought out kupuna and pursued studies with the goal of passing the knowledge to future generations.
"We feel it is our kuleana to elevate and perpetuate the Hawaiian culture," said Turqueza.
Mossman, a Maui musician, writes and performs her own original song and traditional Hawaiian music written by her great-grandmother, Bina Mossman. She has performed with the band Kahala Moon and was the lead singer for the band Lawa, which opened for KC & The Sunshine Band.
The Story of Hawaii Museum is a unique exhibit that tells the tale of the islands in chronological order through the use of historic maps, charts, documents and artifacts. The exhibit includes rare prints, maps and authentic antique pieces--some hundreds of years old.
Located in the Ma'alaea Shops near the Maui Ocean Center, the Story of Hawai'i Museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for children under 12, and includes a DVD about the mapping of Hawai'i. Docent-led tours are $10 per person.
