Power to Maui Electric Co. customers in Wailea and parts of Kihei was restored Saturday afternoon, Nov. 24, after an outage of nearly two hours.
A notice had been posted on Maui County's Website reporting that approximately 10,000 customers in South Maui had lost power at 11:45 a.m. According to a news release from Kau'i Awai-Dickson, Maui Electric Company spokeswoman, power was restored at 12:15 p.m. to about 8,000 customers and remaining customers were brought back on line at 1:30 p.m.
MECO officials said the power outage in parts of was caused by technical problems arising from preparations for an interconnection tie-in with a transformer to accept renewable power from the Auwahi Wind project in 'Ulupalakua.
The project has yet to go online. A spokesperson said construction of the wind farm is ongoing.
