Makana by Moonlight & Willie Kalikimaka

December 6, 2012
The Maui Weekly

The Maui Arts & Cultural Center (MACC) promises to light up your holiday season with two special concerts by legendary Hawaiian music stars this weekend.

Makana returns to the moonlit ambience of Yokouchi Pavilion on Friday, Dec. 7, and adds an exciting, new dimension to his music, teaming with acclaimed percussionist Lopaka Colon and Lono on bass and vocals.

Recently, Makana dazzled audiences from the world stage with his phenomenal slack key guitar style when he opened for Santana in Germany and played the main stage at Peter Gabriel's WOMAD Festival in the UK. This guitar virtuoso is guided by a desire to merge his cultural heritage with global themes. Makana's slack key stylings and vocals are filled with innovation, heart and soul, which contribute to his electrifying stage presence. The performance will spotlight Makana's full musical range, encompassing elements of folk, rock, ethnic, classical, bluegrass, jazz and traditional Hawaiian in one big package.
