The Maui Century Ride, held this year on Sunday, Nov. 18, attracted well over 100 riders who completed one of the four courses offered--100, 75, 50 and 25 miles. The annual event is organized by the Maui Bicycle Club. The ride started at Maluaka Beach behind the Maui Prince Resort and returned to Makena for an afternoon barbecue and fellowship for what is considered the annual meeting of Maui cycling enthusiast's from around the island.
"The event is not a race, so there are no winners or losers, but, of course, the cyclists try to beat their fellow riders or achieve a personal best time," said Frank Hackett, South Maui Bicycles owner and Maui Bicycle Club president.
The event has been held since the early '80s, and is in its 16th year of sponsorship by The Maui Bicycle Club, Maui Prince Resort, Hammer Nutrition Products and South Maui Bicycles in Kihei.
By Kahului Airport on Hana Highway, Maui resident and endurance athlete Erol Ackdoe leads the pack of cyclists who participated in the 100-mile course of the Maui Century Ride on Sunday, Nov. 18.
