MECO warns of scammers

December 27, 2012
The Maui Weekly

The Maui News - Maui Electric Co. (MECO) is warning customers about an apparent telephone scam in which callers are told that their electric bill is delinquent and that they are subject to disconnection. MECO reported that some of their customers have received these calls and are told to make payments at certain retail stores using specific debt card services and to then provide the caller with a confirmation number, which grants the scammer access to the customer's funds.

MECO reminds customers not to provide personal, confidential or financial information to any unidentified individual. The company urges customers to be cautious when responding to phone calls and to report any suspicious activity to the company or police.

Customers may pay their bills in person at 210 W. Kamehameha Ave. in Kahului daily and at 32A Ulili St. on Molokai from 8 a.m. to noon Tuesdays.
