South Maui Youth Basketball League Begins
January brings us my personal favorite time of the year--our youth basketball program.
This year is the largest sign up in the 18-year history of the South Maui Youth Basketball League (SMYBL). We have over 400 kids registered to play in our three youngest divisions that began on Monday, Jan. 14: seven teams in the Super Fryer Division (5- to 6-year-olds), nine teams in the Fryers Division (7- to 8-year-olds) and another nine teams in the Jr. Midgets Division (9- to 11-year-olds).
The Super Fryer Division plays their games Friday afternoons at Kamali'i Elementary School. The Fryers Division plays their games Mondays and Wednesdays, also at Kamali'i. The Jr. Midgets play their games Tuesdays and Thursdays at Kalama Park beginning on Tuesday, Jan. 22.
For all three divisions, the first games of the day start at 4 p.m.
Looking forward to a really fun season with all the great young b-ballers!
Senior Softball (50-plus) continues Sunday afternoons at South Maui Community Park until the end of the month.
On Jan. 6, Kevin Fanara went three for four, with a homerun, three RBIs and three runs scored. Rick Racadio also went three for four, knocking in two runs and scoring three to lead Jus Enuff to an easy 21-8 win over Wasabi.
Fred Peterson was Wasabi's top batter, going two for three and scoring one run.
The second game of the day was between the two Maui 5-0 teams, Blue and Gray, with the Blue guys taking an 11-5 lead, then holding off a late Gray rally, winning 13-12.
Mike Wilson led the Blue team, going two for three, with one RBI, and scoring two runs. Dan Fields went four for four, and scored two runs to pace the Gray team.
A season-ending single elimination playoff will be held on Jan. 27, with the first game starting at 11 a.m.
