Maui Farmers Union United and Upcountry Sustainability to hold Movie Night.

January 24, 2013
The Maui Weekly

The Maui Farmers Union United (MFUU) and Upcountry Sustainability (US) are launching a joint venture--Movie Night! Several times a year, the two groups will offer films and/or videos of important current issues.

MFUU and US will show three short films on the challenges to a diversified, stable seed source and what can be done on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 7 p.m., at the Pukalani Community Center's pool room annex (adjacent to the pool area, across the street from Foodland).

"Seeds of Freedom," narrated by Jeremy Irons, charts the story of seed from its roots at the heart of traditional, diversity rich farming systems across the world, to today's highly industrialized agricultural system. The film features the voices of international experts sounding the call for change.

A TED talk with Jonathan Drori called "Why We're Storing Billions of Seeds" describes the process of collecting and safely storing seeds on a worldwide scale.

"Planting a Future: Agroecological Alternatives of the Nuu Saavi People" shows the indigenous people of South America reclaim their traditional seed-saving and planting techniques.

There will also be a seed exchange to build the health of seed diversity on Maui. Bring your successful seed varieties and envelopes for seeds. Include your successful growing instructions, your name and contact information on the envelopes for the next growers.

Potluck desserts are welcomed. Bring your own plate and cup for desserts and tea for this trash-free event.
