The time for justice is always now

February 21, 2013

The recent Hawai'i State House decision to shelve House Bill 1109 (marriage rights) was a disgrace and a poor attempt to appease the radical religious who only believe in civil rights for themselves. How contemptuous is this in a state that prides itself on aloha?

The bill had the backing of President Barrack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, the Hawai'i State Democratic Platform, the O'ahu County Democratic Platform, Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell, Honolulu Councilmember Stanley Chang and Rep. Faye Hanohano, who introduced the bill in the House.

In the Senate, Sen. Roz Baker, Sen. Gilbert Kahele, Sen. Maile Shimabukuro and Sen. Brian Taniguchi supported Senate Bill 1369 on marriage. Sen. Baker, Sen. Kahele and Sen. Taniguchi introduced the bill in the Senate.

This list does not count the number of couples who have come forward for civil unions, nor the countless others who have traveled to other states that are civilized enough to offer marriage to our LGBT children.

The thoughtless, self-centered religious who don't pay taxes on their income and only $300 a year on their multi-million dollar properties continue to brow beat the Legislature. The churches bleed the taxpayers of this state while they continue to deny social justice for our children.

In a civilized state, all citizens enjoy the same rights. So we must live in an un-civilized state. Welcome to Hawai'i!
