Maui Safeway stores raise over $25,000 to fight hunger

March 7, 2013
The Maui Weekly

Safeway Hawai'i presented a donation of $109,773.55 to the Hawai'i Foodbank as a result of Safeway's "Help Us End Hunger" holiday food drive and Hawai'i Foodbank's "Check-Out Hunger" fundraising campaign. Of that total, $25,080.16 was donated from Safeway Maui stores.

Thanks to Safeway customers, 7,213 bags of groceries were sold at check out stands and donated to those in need this past holiday season. The donations from Safeway benefit food banks on each island - Hawai'i Foodbank on O'ahu and Kaua'i, Maui Food Bank and The Food Basket on the Big Island. Last year, Safeway Hawai'i donated $91,117.76 to the Hawai'i Food Bank. Every donation received helped feed one in seven people in Hawai'i-more than 14 percent of the state's population who must turn to a food bank for assistance.
