Flames Turn Up the Heat at Junior Midgets Championships

The South Maui Youth Basketball Junior Midgets wrapping up another awesome season with a playoff day at Pa'ia Gym last week.

Opening the eight-game marathon, Swag got by the Cobras 26-16. Tevita Mafileo scored 10 points to lead Swag. Ben Janssen had a game high 11 points for the Cobras.

Raider Damuni scored 16 points, leading Elite past Rising Stars 25-15. Jaiden Eldredge led the Stars with four points.

The top-seeded Flames ended Swag's season 26-17 with Efron Villon scoring 11 points. Tevita Mafileo led Swag again, scoring seven points.

Eric Doolin scored 13 points as the Eagles held off the Kihei Sharks 29-24. Elijah Mertens had 10 points to top the Sharks.

The Heat edged the Clippers 38-35 with Christian Lee scoring 11 points. Isaiah Richards scored a game high 15 points in a losing cause for the Clippers.

Led again by Villon, who scored 11 points, the Flames defeated Elite 31-22. Raider Damuni, the league's leading scorer, finished with 13 points.

Noah Abreu's nine points, and hustle led the Eagles past the Heat 24-17. Keanu Akina-Ancog's nine points led the Heat.

The championship game between the Eagles and Flames was a rematch of last year's final won by the Eagles. This season's edition was close all the way with the Eagles holding a slight lead until the last few minutes, when the Flames surged to victory, 33-27. Villon's brother, Michael, was the Flames top scorer with nine points. Eric Doolin scored 12 points for the Eagles despite suffering an injury in a collision with a Flames player that kept him out of the game for several minutes.

We'll take about a month break and be back in later this month with boys' and girls' 14-and-under divisions.

On March 24, the inaugural South Maui Adult Coed Kickball League (SMACK) season headed into its final month with five more great games. With the playoffs coming up, intensity seems to be ramping up also.

It Burns When I Kick shutout Balls Deep 4-0. Anne Loney was top kicker, going two-for-three with one RKI.

Alex Ahlstrom and Matt Conmy went a combined seven-for-10, leading Ballsagna over the Drinking Team With A Kicking Problem 5-1.

Livin' The Dream got two RKIs from Joe Chmeleck to edge the Meatballerz 3-2. Shawna Wyatt and Nina Smock each kicked in one of the Meatballerz' runs.

Don't Shaft My Balls mercy ruled Footloose 14-3. Kishin Hamaguchi had four RKIs for Don't.

Da Kine handed Pono Stars their first loss, 2-1. With the win, Da Kine pulled into a three-way tie for first place with It Burns When I Kick and Pono Stars. All three teams entered the Easter break at 5-1.

Games resume Sunday, April 7, at the South Maui District Community Park.

A single-elimination playoff is tentatively scheduled for May 4 and 5.
