Protect our revered companions

April 11, 2013
Barbara Steinberg - Kihei , The Maui Weekly

Dogs are our revered companions. We are their guardians. They are family, not possessions like a book or table that can be disposed of. We care deeply about dogs, because they give so much to us and make our lives so full. A dog is man's best friend.

But go to carrollcox.com/show030313.htm to listen to the radio show on the dog meat trade on O'ahu.

When these cruel people kill dogs for meat in Hawai'i, they put a bag over its head and club it and let it bleed to death. When the dog is still partially or fully unconscious, they torch the fur.

The puppy mill protection was passed; these dog meat facilities are worse than many of them.

Some say the government should not be allowed to tell us what to eat. But this slaughter is not regulated, and the dogs are kept in cold, damp places with no roof over their heads.

According to cruelty law, it is illegal to kill a dog, but still not illegal to eat it or sell it. How can that make sense?

Sen. Hee and Rep. Rhoads would not hear SB197/HB1349 to ban this cruel practice in Hawai'i. Do they not believe this occurs? Why would they not hear it?

We must all work together to stop this cruel dog meat trade and adopt the attitude as guardians to protect dogs and speak and act in defense of all helpless living creatures
