MBB holds Business on the Grill Sessions

April 11, 2013
The Maui Weekly

Since January 2013, Maui Business Brainstormers (MBB) has encouraged its members to "Submit your business to be grilled!"

MBB launched this new segment in its regular monthly meeting at the Maui County Business Resource Center (MCBRC).

"Experts in business management praised the new segment when we first announced it, and MBB members had the first taste during our regular meeting in January," said MBB Organizer Grace Fung.

To qualify for the new segment, the business must be in operation with sales and the need to grow, but facing challenges. The selected member must be able to present (at the podium) all relevant details. (Sales pitches for products or services are prohibited.) The segment creates a case study for mutual learning.

MBB Member Charles Keoho, an entrepreneurial businessman and Education Committee chairperson at Maui Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce, accepted the MBB invitation to be "grilled" at the January meeting.

"It was fun. I would definitely encourage all members to participate," said Keoho. "I thought I would need flameproof underwear. It wasn't necessary. Great opportunity for a live SWOT [Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats] analysis."

Due to the success of that new segment, MBB's regular meetings have been renamed "MBB Business on the Grill." The meeting also has other segments helping members get to know each other and brainstorm each other's business challenges.

In February, MBB member and business owner Blen Hinton experienced the organization's second grill session. "It was a valuable way to talk about my business, Maui Grocery Service," said Hinton. "Lots of great feedback and questions to help me focus going forward in 2013. The whole meeting was very informative as I learned much from other business trials and successes here in Maui."

MBB Business on the Grill reached its full capacity in March.

"Our members are the invaluable contributors to the success of our meetings, said Fung. "They are also our driving force and direction indicators."

MBB encourages more individuals and small businesses to place their businesses on the MBB Grill. To apply, fill out the online questionnaire at www.mauibusinessbrainstormers.org.

"Business on the Grill is not about roasting you or your business--where everyone takes a pot shot at you," said MBB Expert Business Coach Michael Kern. "Being on the Grill allows you to present your business, your vision, your challenges, your successes, and members will add positive brainstorming ideas and solutions. This format is to help you achieve your goals and dreams of success."

Maui Business Brainstormers is a local group of 340 self-organized entrepreneurs and small business owners.
