Heading south toward the "hotel-row" section of Wailea this weekend, I decided to try out a restaurant my friends have been talking about, called Ko--and what a sweet decision it was!
I've lived here for 12 years, but was blown away by the personal (and business) attitude of this newly remodeled restaurant.
Start off with great food (we're talking Wailea here!) and then add the elegant and timely service one would expect from this genre of eateries, but without the stiff and formal pressure that one sometimes feels from an overly zealous wait staff. Add a great wine list and wonderful island ambience--and what's not to love?
and Another Thing…
Executive Chef Tylun Pang leads the culinary masterpiece of Ko, the only fine-dining restaurant on Maui to offer cuisine inspired by Maui's sugarcane plantation era.
Located at The Fairmont Kea Lani in Wailea, Ko features island family recipes and includes farm-fresh Hawaiian, Chinese, Filipino, Portuguese, Korean and Japanese menu items, including lots of options for vegans, vegetarians and gluten-free eaters as well.
But here's the clincher: Unlike most restaurants on Maui that never offer (or sometimes offer or only at special times of the year offer) kama'aina pricing for local residents, Ko offers 50 percent off food all the time and 25 percent off all drinks all the time at the bar and hi-top tables (which I like as much as the main dining area for ambiance anyway).
Ko is definitely showing appreciation for residents here on the Valley Isle. Here's hoping our kama'aina will appreciate their appreciation for a long time.
In short, Ko is where I'll be going to eat regularly with my friends and guests for as long as they keep offering great food, great ambience, great service and genuinely appreciative, affordable prices for our fellow Maui residents.
Be sure to share your experience!
The bar is open from 11a.m. to 9 p.m. Call for reservations at (808) 875-2210.
