Maui Weekly

The Maui News - An unscheduled and unauthorized sugar cane burn in Pa'ia off Baldwin Avenue on Sunday, May 19, burned five acres with an estimated loss of $25,000 to Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co., a fire official said Sunday evening.

Units from Pa'ia, Makawao and Kahului responded to the blaze. When crews arrived on the scene, they found about two acres of cane on fire. Fire crews employed hardlines, which are hoses on reels that can be charged with water while being pulled for quick attack of the fire, said Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga. HC&S equipment and workers arrived on the scene, and fire crews were released at about 4 p.m.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was undetermined.
