Two brush fires along Mokulele Highway in South Maui on Thursday, May 16, led Maui police to shut down the highway for less than half-an-hour as fire crews quickly doused the flames, fire officials said.
Around 1:10 p.m., fire crews were dispatched to two brush fires along Mokulele Highway, about half a mile south of the Maui Humane Society.
One fire was 150 feet by 15 feet on the median, while the other was a 100-foot-by-5-foot fire on the west shoulder of the Kihei-bound lane. Both fires burned grass in the area.
The fire was under control and extinguished by 1:48 p.m. The cause of the fire was undetermined.
The Kihei and Kahului fire crews and a Kahului water tanker responded to the fire.
