The most intriguing event this side of Kaka'ako and Chinatown is about to take off again: ArT=Mixx Maui launches the RunWAY Edition on Friday, June 21, at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, starting at 7 p.m. and running all the way to midnight. To make this even more exciting news--it's free!
So what is this ArT=Mixx thing? Hard to describe in a handful of words, but the event incorporates visual art, photography, video art, music, fashion, maker-spaces, dance, conceptual performance, interactive displays and just about every other cool, creative thing you can think up!
ArT=Mixx is a thrice-annual event presented by the MACC and sponsored by the County of Maui, now in its second year. It was conceived with the idea that exhibits presented in the Schaefer International Gallery act as a focal point--or a jumping-off point--for an interactive social event full of art, music and fun. It is a fusion of visual, performing and graphic arts, with the extra-added attraction of interactivity: artist and audience meet and greet.
Jennifer Jensen’s designs express her view of “the unruly elegance and vivid beauty of life,” and reflects her visual interpretations of the natural world and cultural themes past and present.

This edition of ArT=Mixx, RunWAY, takes fashion as its theme to the extreme! Dressy attire is encouraged (after all, how many opportunities does one get to do that on the island?) and the themed contests encourage creativity in classy wearables. Stride for the prize in the "Show Me Your Shoes" contest, and gals are sure to go wild for "Guys in Ties."
One of the highlights of the evening will be an actual runway fashion show in Yokouchi Pavilion, featuring "wearable art" and the innovative designs of local talent accompanied by video and music for an extrasensory multimedia experience.
For example, Solstice Schehera-zade is a collection by Maui designer Jennifer Jensen in her Island Nuvo line, which reflects her visual interpretations of the natural world and cultural themes past and present.
Designer Juicy produces fantastic one-of-a-kind vests and jackets that encompass a collage of influences, found treasures and decorations from his travels around the world. He will show his menswear collection with video designed by Tom Sewell and a team of international summer video interns.
Designer Koa Johnson creates original avant-garde high fashion pieces for men and women in his KoJo Couture line. His collection will be shown with video production by Josh Meredith, who also serves as the overall video technician and producer of the event.
Carrying through on the fashion theme, a boutique will be set up in Morgado Hall where the designers' originals can be purchased, along with a selection of other fun, fabulous, fashionista accessories and clothing. Food and beverages will be available throughout the evening as attendees enjoy dancing and more music, more video, more art, more friends and fun.
(ArT=Mixx is for adults 21 and over.)
