After 38 years in dentistry, Dr. Howard T. Shimokawa is retiring. Located in Azeka Shopping Center since opening the practice, Dr. Shimokawa has provided excellent dental care and customer service to so many people throughout the island, including Azeka Center founder Bill Azeka and his family.
"I have equal parts excitement and sadness of a significant change in my dental practice and my life," said Dr. Shimokawa. "However, I think it's time to ride into the sunset and enjoy the golden years," he said.
Nonetheless, Dr. Shimokawa, who also served our community as president of the Kihei-Wailea Rotary Club and president of the Kihei Youth Center board of directors, didn't take retirement seriously until he found the person he could trust and recommend for continued dental care in his Azeka office.

"After meeting Dr. Jonathan Thomas, I finally decided to retire knowing that the future dental care of my patients was in good hands," said Dr. Shimokawa.
The members of the staff were instrumental in handpicking Dr. Thomas and are confident he will continue to provide excellent dental care. The present team of Linda, Debby, Tiana, Jessica, Tommi and Cathy will remain and ensure that all dental needs are met through the transition.
"You can be confident of the same friendly atmosphere and excellent customer care you have come to expect," said Dr. Shimokawa.
Having practiced on Hawai'i Island for four years, Dr. Thomas came highly recommended. He received his D.D.S. degree from the University of Maryland and completed his general practice residency in Central California.
Before his dental training, Dr. Thomas completed a degree in Visual Arts, which enhances his ability to create beautiful smiles. In addition, his calm and friendly personality puts patients at ease.
"Like Dr. Shimokawa, I am committed to providing excellent care and service to my clients," said Dr. Thomas. "The opportunity to continue the dental needs in our community for years to come is something I am very much looking forward to," he said.
Dr. Shimokawa is grateful to those that have played such an enjoyable part in his professional life and for the many years of support.
"Thank you so much for your loyalty and understanding over the years and during this transition," he said. "I owe a ton of gratitude to the people of Kihei and Wailea for the many years of friendship and association."
