The Hawai'i Department of Education successfully made its case before the state Land Use Commission on June 27 for reclassifying 77 acres of land on Maui from Agricultural to Urban for a new $130 million high school in Kihei.
State Land Use Commissioner Sheldon Biga from Maui successfully added an amendment requiring the state Department of Education to work with the state Department of Transportation to create an overpass or an underpass for students to cross Pi'ilani Highway.
"I have traveled that highway on several occasions and I know the speeds people travel on that road," Biga said about his amendment to the motion to approve the land use by the SLUC.
The LUC's next steps are to formally approve a Decision and Order to implement the approval. The D&O will be prepared by LUC staff for commission approval. Additional land-use approvals from the county and final approval by the County Council will be needed to move the project forward to the initiation of construction.
