‘Damien’

August 1, 2013
Maui Weekly

Vinnie Linares will perform a one-man show about St. Damien, minister among the lepers of Molokai, on Saturday, Aug. 10, at Holy Innocents Episcopal Church in Lahaina.

Linares, a retired English professor at University of Hawaii Maui Community College, has been performing Aldyth Morris' play about Fr. Damien of Molokai since 2000. He has taken his one-man show to various locations around Hawai'i, to the Mainland and to Scotland, but never to West Maui until now.

The play highlights significant moments in the turbulent life of Father Damien, who treated lepers as patients instead of outcasts. The Maui News said, "Damien performed by Linares is more than theater. It is an affirmation of how powerful devotion can be."
