A shark attack has forced the closure of a South Maui beach today.
The attack took place at Ulua Beach sometime between 8:30 and 8:45 a.m.
Ocean Safety officials report the attack happening in 10 feet of water, about 30 feet off shore.
In response, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources and the County of Maui have closed off the area a mile in both directions, from Polo Beach to the area fronting the Mana Kai Maui resort.
Both the state and county have jet skis in the water as well as state ATV beach patrols. Signs have also been posted warning people not to go into the water.
At this time, no information about the victim is available, except that she is female and was bitten in the upper torso.
The beach will be closed until sunset today and the area will be evaluated before re-opening tomorrow.
