As the summer calendar page turns to August, it's time for one of Maui's most anticipated events--Maui Calls, the annual gala fundraiser for the Maui Arts & Cultural Center (The MACC) to be held on Friday, Aug. 9, from 6 to10 p.m. in the A&B Amphitheater, Yokouchi Pavilion and Schaefer Gallery. This year, the event theme is "In Celebration of the Surfrider," with some of Hawai'i's surfing luminaries in attendance.
Of course, a primary feature of this signature event is the opportunity to sample the sumptuous tastes of Maui's best restaurants and fine wines from around the world. But The MACC's annual Maui Calls fundraiser is also a fabulous social event, featuring an entire evening of festivities with music and dancing, live and silent auctions, delicious pupu, desserts and coffee drinks.
Ahumanu will provide dinner music, and Jimmy Mac & the Kool Kats will set the pace for after-dinner dancing in the glowing pavilion. And there is sure to be a special surprise musical guest as well.
The live and silent auctions at Maui Calls always feature some of the best items found at any Valley Isle fundraiser, and this year is no exception. Special guitars autographed by celebrities who have performed at The MACC over the preceding year, as well as other "Uniquely Maui" items will be up for bid. These include a painting class with George Allan, golf with Don Nelson, a guided horseback tour of Pi'iholo Ranch with Peter Baldwin, a private lu'au in your own backyard by Old Lahaina Lu'au and more!
Also among the auction offerings will be gift certificates from the islands' best restaurants, fine wines from the participating wineries, jewelry, artwork, Maui adventures and Mainland/Neighbor Island getaways.
In keeping with the theme of the event, there will also be surf-worthy items--a standup paddleboard, surf lessons and board rental certificates.
A dazzlingly unique Maui Calls auction item will be offered by Shep Gordon, who has offered to welcome a party up to 20 people to his home. Mark Ellman of Mala and Sheldon Simeon of "Top Chef" will show their culinary wow-power with flavorful and visionary cuisine, while HAPA serenades guests with their stirring contemporary Hawaiian music. This is an opportunity of a lifetime on the beach in Wailea, so be ready to bid for one spectacular evening!
Maui Calls is all about Hawai'i's boat days--vintage Hawai'i. In the 1920s and '30s, visitors who arrived at Aloha Tower in Honolulu via Matson ship were greeted by hula dancers in grass skirts. With this year's theme, "In Celebration of the Surfrider," The MACC recognizes not only the iconic Waikiki Beach Boys on longboards, but also the modern-day board riders who have taken the sport of surfing to ever-higher levels of performance and thrills.
Maui Calls is made possible by the extraordinary support of Paradise Beverages Inc. and Alan Johns, along with the Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort and Chef Eric Favre.
Proceeds from Maui Calls support the arts education, cultural and community programs at The MACC, which has enriched the lives of people on Maui for almost two decades.
