Home Gardening Support Network (HGSN) and Maui School Garden Network (MSGN) are offering a hands-on, six-week training program designed specifically for teachers, parents and volunteers involved in youth gardening.
The two-hour-long classes are available after school.
The gardening series will be held on Mondays in South Kihei at Kamali'i Elementary School, from Sept. 9 to Oct. 21, from 2:45 to 4:45 p.m.
The series will be held on Tuesdays for Central Maui schools from Sept. 3 to Oct. 8 from 2:30-4:30 p.m.
The West Side series will be held on Thursdays from Sept. 5 to Oct. 17 from 2:30-4:30 p.m.
The sessions will involve activities, subject matter and topic overviews that connect gardening curricula to teaching standards.
Topics covered include soils, propagation techniques, starting a vegetable garden, organic gardening techniques, pests, diseases, weed identification and control.
Optional classes can be exchanged for any of the session above, including aquaponics, hydroponics, creating edible landscapes, pruning made easy and natural pesticides use.
The training fee for the six weeks series is $40 per teacher. The fee will be $90 after Wednesday, Aug. 21.
MSGN will sponsor the first five teachers to register in each school. A minimum of 10 teachers (or teachers plus parents) is required in order to host the gardening classes at a school location.
Don't miss this opportunity to learn more about gardening and to be in a position to help your students in their school and youth gardens.
