A giant crane maneuvered an 18,000-pound, high-powered magnet into Maui Diagnostic Imaging's Triangle Square medical facility recently. After the intricate installation process, including the addition of special shielding walls, MDi will be home of Maui's only three-Tesla MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) service.
Local physicians and their patients have long awaited this state-of-the-art technology on Maui. Many exams previously available only on O'ahu will now be done on-island in the comfort of MDI's newly remodeled and expanded facility. The GE 3.0 Tesla MRI's powerful magnet will provide advanced scanning options for radiologists with increased resolution and decreased scan time.
"I am so proud we now have top-of-the-line MRI technology that is on equal footing with O'ahu and the Mainland," said Dr. Andrew Kayes, MDI's medical director. "This is fantastic for the Maui community."
Among patient comfort features are a wider space inside the MRI unit and a 500-pound maximum capacity weight limit. Patients may also choose to enter the machine feet or head first--neither of which were possible before. In addition, an MRI compatible music system will be available for patients to plug in their iPod or CD and enjoy their own personal music selections during their exam.
MDi's next arrival will be the island's first and only 40-slice CT, due in late September.
Outpatient medical imaging services include MRI, CT, ultrasound, digital mammography, x-ray and bone densitometry.
