Pint Night Benefit for the Birds

September 19, 2013
Maui Weekly

There's a unique partnership between two unlikely organizations that happens quarterly on the West Side of Maui. Since September 2009, the Maui Brewing Company (MBC) has hosted benefit nights for the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project (MFBRP). These "Pint Nights for the Birds" help raise money for endangered forest bird recovery and forest restoration on the island.

On benefit nights--Oct. 4 and Dec. 27 between 6 and 10 p.m.--half of the night's pint sales will go to Maui's native forest birds.

MFBRP is a research organization that was created in 1997. Its mission is to develop and implement techniques that recover Maui's endangered birds. Their main research and management is centered on the rare and critically endangered kiwikiu, or Maui parrotbill. This bird is only found high in the forests of Haleakala and there are approximately 500 left in the wild.

Color-banded kiwikiu are marked and re-sighted to determine territories, pairs and survival. These data are used to determine reproductive success, as well as factors most influential in limiting the population. One of the main recovery goals for the kiwikiu is to reintroduce them to the dry side of Haleakala where they were once found. This area is vastly deforested, thus much restoration is needed. MFBRP has initiated a program to restore the area and eventually re-introduce the kiwikiu to the Nakula Natural Area Reserve.

MBC is a truly Hawaiian brewery, making 100 percent of its beer--canned and draft--in Hawai'i. Recognized as the state's No. 1 craft beer since 2005, the company has a strong commitment to the local economy and the environment. Through the years, MBC has become a perennial supporter of many island charities and nonprofit organizations like MFBRP.

The MBC Brewpub is located at the Kahana Gateway Shopping Center, 4405 Honoapi'ilani Highway, just north of Lahaina.
