Maui March Against Monsanto organizers held a peaceful community demonstration beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku. The theme of the march was "Bee the Change," and many demonstrators dressed in bee costumes or wore black and yellow clothing. Event organizers said the march was held to bring awareness to concerns about GMOs (genetically modified organisms) and pesticides in our food and environment with the goal of a GMO-free Maui. "Let's ban open-air experimentation," an event flyer read, and "make it clear to the world that Maui should not be ground zero for GMO experimentation."
Courtney Bruch, one of the event's organizers, said the 200 to 300 marchers participating included members of GMO Free Maui, Aloha Revolution, Save Hawai'i from Monsanto and the Mom Hui.
