Cash for Clothes: Be Green, Get Green

Savers offers recycling-fundraising opportunities.

While we continue to explore how decreasing our contributions to Mount Opala might mitigate our rising electric bills (see recent and current Maui Weekly stories) and increase the environmental health of our island, our local recycling retail store just down the road in Kahului has a simple, pragmatic solution for some of our immediate refuse dilemmas. Plus, you can make some cash for your club, church, sports team or scout troop.

Savers is accepting applications from local community groups and nonprofits for the opportunity to raise funds for their own programs and services through its "Cash for Clothes, Be Green, Get Green" drive.

In addition to handing your organization cash for every pound of clothing you deliver, Savers will also pay it's local non-profit partners--Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hawai'i, Women Helping Women and the National Kidney Foundation. The more you give, the more they get.

It's a win-win-win-win!

Any time you choose to donate your unwanted clothing or household items instead of discarding them in the trash, you also participate in "the thrift store cycle"--the complete circle of benefits realized by recycling goods.

Your donation positively impacts Savers' nonprofit alliances and their programs, and Savers' customers who rely on access to quality goods at great values. The majority of items that don't sell are shipped to developing nations through both wholesale and philanthropic efforts. Individuals in developing countries can then create their own marketplaces that serve citizens who rely on good affordable merchandise. And of course, our island benefits through waste reduction and natural resource conservation.

Donating does a world of good. So instead of trashin' your fashion faux pas, recycle them for cash at Savers.

Items eligible for the pay-by-the-pound program are clothing, shoes, accessories, and bed and bath items.

Additionally, Savers can help recycle unwanted housewares, furniture and books.

If your organization is interested in this fundraising opportunity, contact the Savers Community Donation Center at (808) 871-7244 or email 1118@Savers.com.
