Man pleads no contest to manslaughter charges in killing of Kihei Longs manager

January 16, 2014
Maui Weekly

The Maui News - After pleading no contest last week to manslaughter in the death of a Longs Drug Store manager who was trying to stop a shoplifting, a Kihei man is facing a sentence of up to 20 years in prison or 10 years' probation.

Peter Schmidt, 30, entered the plea as part of an agreement calling for the prosecution to dismiss first-degree robbery and third-degree assault charges against him.

The charges were brought after Jamie Hozaki, manager of the Kihei Longs, and another employee had followed Schmidt after he left the store without paying for a 30-pack of beer at about 5:30 a.m. Dec. 23, 2012, according to police. Schmidt is scheduled to be sentenced March 11.
