The United States Tennis Association (USTA) Hawai'i Pacific Section is holding its 2014 Royal Lahaina Challenger from Jan. 19 to 26, at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch, showcasing some of the world's top tennis professionals.
The $50,000 purse, USTA Pro Circuit event is being presented by American Savings Bank and is hosted by the Royal Lahaina Resort and the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch.
The Challenger is Hawai'i's premiere and only professional tennis event in the Hawaiian Islands, drawing highly ranked men players from countries throughout the world.
The USTA Pro Circuit was launched in 1980 to give players an opportunity to gain professional ranking points needed to compete on the major pro tennis tours.
Qualifying singles and doubles matches are being held on Sunday and Monday, Jan. 19 and 20, with spectators allowed free entry to the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch.
Main draw daytime and evening tournament matches will be played Tuesday through Friday, Jan. 21 to 24. Semi-final and finals matches will be held Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 25 and 26. Main draw and semi-final event spectator admission is $5 per person for each of session.
Throughout the qualifying and tournament play, the Royal Lahaina Challenger will host a number of community events, including an invitational Pro-Am, adult and teen tennis clinics, Boys & Girls Club visit, Big Brothers/Big Sisters visit, youth tennis fest, ice cream and flag nights, and special appreciation nights for families and USTA Adult League and members. The Boys & Girls Club can visit the tournament site Jan. 22 and Big Brothers/Big Sisters will have an on-court tennis clinic Jan. 25. There will also be a USTA Member Appreciation booth and a national anthem singing competition will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the finals weekend.
