I was very interested in Pete Jalbert's comments ("Affordable Housing Inventory Shrinks & Prices Rise," Feb. 6) that the purchase of affordable homes or renting an affordable apartment are rapidly becoming unaffordable.
Maui is a beautiful place to live if one has the financial resources to have a place to call home. According to Mr. Jalbert, builders are reluctant to build affordable units because of low profitablity.
To me, this is a Maui County mega-problem that no one seems ready to tackle with a large-scale solution.
I have suggested for the longest time for Maui County to buy land and hire a contractor to build homes or apartments tied to the wages people earn. We buy land for parks, conservation, etc., so why not buy land so that Maui's people can have a home?
