The debate and subsequent council action on pesticide and GMOs that is ongoing has stirred up many of us to participate and/or watch the proceedings in the Maui County Council chambers.
Thank you Akaku: Maui Community Television and Maui Weekly for covering it.
What has become obvious is that this issue has a history of being confronted and remedied elsewhere, like Kaua'i and Switzerland. Just yesterday, I watched Dr. Oz (network television) present compelling arguments for mandatory labeling of foods.
The question is asked repeatedly: Why won't the food manufacturers label GMO products? One answer that manufacturers give is that it is too expensive. Response to that: They are required to label products with all components anyway and seem to do so responsibly. What's the big deal? Seems there is more to it.
Consumer citizens are more informed than ever thanks to the broad range of communication networks, like The Maui Weekly. That is why I am glad for the coverage of this important local issue. Look forward to seeing more of it in the near future.
Mahalo to Akaku and Maui Weekly.
