UHMC Offers Sustainable Landscaping Classes

March 6, 2014
Maui Weekly

The University of Hawai'i Maui College EdVenture program is offering a sustainable landscaping series of classes for land care specialists.

Trees are the mainstay of any landscape. On March 7, instructor Cynthia Nazario-Leary will present "Fruit Tree Planting, Care and Pruning." Proper planting, maintenance and pruning will enhance the health and productivity of these food-bearing trophies.

Jeannie Pezzoli will present and in-depth course called "Pruning for Tropical Ornamentals" on April 26. In past trainings, Pezzoli has instructed landscape crews and homeowners alike in techniques for aesthetics and tree health.

Anne Gachuhi will focus to lawn care management, starting on June 5. This five-session course will offer strategies to reduce the use of lawn care products, water, time and labor, while achieving a beautiful, non-toxic lawn. Through soil improvement, mowing practices and sustainable disease, insects and weed control, participants can transform their lawn care habits to be Earth and ocean-friendly.

To register, call EdVenture at 984-3231.
